Rocky Horror in DENMARK MAINE?!

The title to this post was the first thought that spurred through my mind when I heard that we were putting on a movie sing-a-long.

Then, I was reassured that it would be a SOUND OF MUSIC sing-a-long, nothing too radical!

But, in many ways, these two evenings with movies will be very similar. Like a Rocky Horror Night – tonight, when the riff raff of the town (see what I did there?) lights up and the people pour in, they will be presented with a ‘goodie-bag’. These bags are filled with treats and instructions for their entertainment whilst enjoying the Rodgers and Hammerstein classic.

Emcee’d by two whacked out Germans (who yet to be named), the audience will be guided through the movie so they may best enjoy their time here at the wonderful Denmark Arts Center.

The event shall be spectacular! It shall be fun! And it is a good way for all to get out of their SHELLS!

Denmark & Lee

War is hell with a high price.  We know this.  The problem is, what we know, we also forget.

This Saturday’s film, Welcome To Lee, Maine, is a film that should remind us of the price we pay when we go to war.  It is a film that shows us a small community trying to answer some very big questions—about why we fight; about how we cope with loss; about patriotism and what it means to be an American.

I hope you’ll come on down tomorrow to see this film and meet director Bill Perna.  To whet your appetite, I offer this recent interview with Bill, conducted by our own Tom Porter on MPBN.

Cheers!

Denmark on the Red Carpet

Ahem….We’ve been a bit quiet about this news, but I suppose it’s high time to cast the modesty false, and crow a little bit. After all, it’s not every day that a feature film gets made in Denmark, let alone one that sees itself feted at the Opening Night Gala of the MAINE INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL!!!

Poster for MIFF-15

That’s right, this July (Friday, the 13th to be precise.  Hope that bodes well….), Denmark will get fully MIFF’d, as the feature film VACATIONLAND opens the 15th annual festival with a gala screening at the Waterville Opera House.

Filmed in the summer of 2010, and edited & scored last summer, VACATIONLAND is a co-production of the Denmark Arts Center and the New York based film company, Complicated, Inc.  The film was shot entirely in Denmark, save for one location that got sadly abandoned just over the town line in Bridgton, and the noble DAC even has a cameo in the film.

Telling the story of a family reunion where the only people who show up are those who didn’t realize it was cancelled, VACATIONLAND is a comedic drama about the fates of family; the myths of Maine; and the power of love. Check out the trailer!

We hope some Denmarkians may be interested in making the trek up to Waterville to see the film in all its Gala-riffic glory!  If you’re interested, get in touch—there may be a carpool headed Northwards from the DAC that Friday.  Or, if you want to attend on your own steam, there is lots more information on the MIFF Website, including how to purchase tickets.

And for those of you who can’t make it up there, who knows: perhaps we’ll have a special surprise screening this summer right here at the DAC.

Cheers,

Jamie
