Friday, August 22, 7pm at the Denmark Arts Center the Denmark Historical Society will present a program featuring Mr. Philip Woodbury, a member and Captain of a military re-enactment group, Joshua Beall's Company of the Maryland Forces. Historically, Joshua Beall's Company was raised in 1756 by the colony of Maryland to protect settlers from the French and their Indian allies during the French and Indian War. Mr. Woodbury will present an overview of the French and Indian War - the forgotten war in America - and its impact on American history, an impact which still goes largely unrecognized by most Americans. Maine, by virtue of its proximiy to French Canada at the time of the War, played a significant role in that conflict. The program is free, and open to the general public. |
The Sheepfest is an annual event held on the third Saturday of April, the perfect
time for spring shearing. Originally planned as a service to small flock owners the Sheepfest developed into a small jewel of New England fiber festivals. Close to fifty sheep are sheared of their winter's growth of fiber. Fleeces are skirted, bagged, made ready to process or to sell. Inside the hall vendors demontrate their fiber arts and are eager to teach anyone interested in learning about working with fiber. Their colorful displays show what can be done with not just wool, but alpaca, angora, mohair, and llama fiber, too. It is a fun and educational event suitable for all ages. |
